Contrary to this poster of unknown origin, passed along by Jack Mackie, nobody owns anything. That’s what makes it art. Everything is always in the process of being rethought. I’m reproducing it because I like the way it looks on a page, with the central spine of the word “owns” and prickly words as leaves on either side, and because it has a nice sound shape when read aloud.
Anybody know whose poster this is, please let me know so I can credit. Thanks, everybody! The artist is Vuk Vidor.

Regina, I got a little chuckle over your joke about giving credit to whoever made that poster.
But of course people do have a perceptable ownership over their creations and achieving this type of ownership would be considered a milestone in any artist’s career.
For those who lack originality, perhaps appropriation is the only recourse.
(Yuk, “career”, I hate that word)

I saw this recently, also sent to me by Jack. Was there ever a version made with more of the great ladies in Art? Why is this still such an issue in the 21st Century?

Good question, Erin.
