I like what Elie Wiesel told a man who boasted of keeping a Jewish friend’s Torah safe in Berlin during the war. Learning that the friend did not survive, Wiesel told the man he should have kept the Jew safe and let the Nazis have the Torah. There are always more where that Torah came from, but in the Jewish tradition, if you save a life, you save the world. In the Roman Catholic tradition, the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church. It’s true: Jews are more sensible than Catholics.
