Before the wheel, the flute and tailored furs came the jar, the
jug, the pot and bowl. They are the oldest forms and the most diverse.
Contemporary vessels carry their utilitarian history. Even though many
have moved out of the craft ghetto, that ghetto remains a kind of roots
music, allowing artists who hear it to dig down to waken.
