For serious movie fans, the shaky concept of “Best” as defined by the Oscars is invalidated from the get-go by a separate category for best foreign film–one that somehow never finds room for, say, Korean master Chan-Wook Park, let alone French master baiter Gaspar Noé. In good years, the Academy ends up saluting a reasonable combination of profit, reputation (who’s overdue?) and genuine cultural impact.
