As much as I’m opposed to the notion that musical learning is directly transmitted from teacher to student, it did cross my mind that musicians may fall into generational groups in terms of their shared practice or thinking. If so, as a pianist I suppose I belong to Generation 8 (Gen 8.0). I’m imagining that “classical” music as a culture of cultivating the durable repertoire of classics begins around 1800, and may be centered on the person Beethoven. Not my family tree then, this is a list of generational representatives.
Gen 2: Czerny
Gen 3: Liszt
Gen 4: Leschetizky
Gen 5: Yesipova [Есипова]
Gen 6: Vengerova
Gen 7: Lateiner
Gen 8: me

As much as the exercise seems inanely amusing… It seems preposterous to think that Beethoven and Liszt dont have wikipedia entries, as someone could rightfully think…

…that they’re so well known they don’t need to be linked.
