Founder and Artistic Director of Forklift Danceworks Allison Orr talks about the community-based dance company and its many collaborations. Forklift creates community-based dance performances with workers that show their skilled movements and tell the often unheard stories of the people whose jobs sustain our daily lives. The workers collaborate with the artistic team at Forklift to create the dances and then the workers themselves perform them. The result is a visually stunning, often moving exploration of the unnoticed work and workers that make our lives possible. In this podcast, Orr discusses the ideas that inspire Forklift, the years-long, multi-tiered process creative process that goes into each performance, the centrality of the collaborative process to its work, and some of the performances it helped to create including its current project “The Way of Water” which explores the effects of climate change and its impact on water from the perspective of frontline workers in a handful of cities around the world.
