For this entry, I’m sharing the latest episode of Quick Study, the NEA’s research podcast. This month, we discuss Emerging from the Cave, a study commissioned by the Sundance Institute and authored by Jesse Cameron Alick. The report captures the most pressing challenges and opportunities for today’s theater artists—in their own words. A transcript of this podcast is available at the NEA website.

The study itself is remarkable for its candor and sense of risk — and play. In addition to what it says about the future of live performance, it has a huge amount to teach us about “performing” data. The arts field has been learning (gradually) about more powerful and expressive forms of data visualization, now time for making data speak.. Bring on more examples.
