New York, NY – Our special, special industry has made it onto Stuff White People Like. I’m like a proud mama bear.
If a white person starts talking to you about classical music, it’s
essential that you tread very lightly. This is because white people
are all petrified that they will be exposed as someone who has only a
moderate understanding of classical music…Therefore it is essential that even if you possess a massive amount of
knowledge about classical music, do not share it with a white person
regardless of how much they profess to love it. It’s a recipe for
disaster and shame.
Thanks to Tom Zydel for the link.

That’s a little tone-deaf. I could write a better one. But the chief problem is that the essay goes astray of the site’s common unspoken definition of “white people” as “insufferably smug urban liberal white people.” The white people who go to classical concerts to remind themselves of their own superiority are old-moneyish.
It is funny trying to have a discussion of classical music with the insufferably smug urban liberal white people who do profess to like it, if by “funny” you mean “depressing.”
