Postscript: June 19—A friend emails that he’s reminded of Picasso’s remark that “if Cézanne had painted or drawn as well as Jacques-Émile Blanche, he would not have been of the slightest interest to me.” Or for that matter, “if he had painted as well as John Singer Sargent, the David Hockney of his day,” says my friend, also a painter. “Which still very much applies to this day.”
