Now for the anecdote. Waller and lyricist Andy Razaf were driving in New Jersey to Atlantic City. On the way they were stopped by a traffic cop. “After pleading for quite some time,” according to Hyman, “Fats simply said, ‘Well, officer, our fate is in your hands.'” Hyman didn’t say what the cop said or did. Maybe the cop didn’t write the ticket.
