… the Sunday Review section of The New York Times publishes a striking opinion piece. It’s a rarity because the section is consistently, even insistently dull. The piece is short, and it is clear from the way it ends on a note of biting but truth-telling sarcasm that the author, Paul Theroux, clearly does not expect his advice to be taken. Go read it: Pardon the American Taliban.
‘John Walker Lindh was motivated by youthful idealism when he aided the Taliban. As a 24-year-old in Africa in the 1960s, I was no different.’
— Paul Theroux
(Postscript: Actually, this morning’s Sunday Review as a whole turns out to be an exception to the rule.)
