I Was Wrong
In my last entry, I agreed with John Rockwell that Paul Giamatti does a good job portraying John Adams in the unfolding HBO series based on David McCullough's biography, but I also said that his looks, which partake not at all of Adams's raptor-like features, are a problem.
I was wrong. I've seen the whole series now, all seven episodes. It is terrific. Giamatti is terrific. The story was filmed roughly chronologically, and you can see him grow into the role, just as Adams grew into his. If you have HBO and the capacity to watch repeat episodes and record those you miss, make an effort to see this series. Of course, once you get into it, it will not be an effort!
