The Year in Arts

The Age (Melbourne)
Once again, from the top...

In many ways, 2001 was a year of the non-sensational.
Greater prestige for regions
For the visual arts, this was the year of the regional galleries.
Composers lift season
While the limelight might have burnt brightly for old, familiar music during 2001, there were a number of occasions when a light shone boldly and proudly on Melbourne's contemporary music scene.
Funding blues hard to shake
In spite of disappointments, jazz remains a significant part of the city's cultural life.
On stage, the ends still don't meet
The two outstanding events of the year were the world premiere of Batavia and the Kirov's magnificently crazy performance of The Fiery Angel, Prokofiev's loony mating of schizophrenia with mystic romanticism.
