It yesterday’s news, I know, but worth a reminder: Donald Rumsfeld won <
EM>“Foot in Mouth” honors from Britain’s
Plain English
Campaign for most baffling comment by a public figure, defeating Der
Grope for the booby prize.
In case you don’t recall, here’s Rumsfeld’s winning remark: “Reports that say something hasn’t
happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are
things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know
there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns — the ones we
don’t know we don’t know.”
Got it? And here’s what Der Grope said, for second place: “I think that gay marriage is
something that should be between a man and a woman.”
