I had planned a more buoyant announcement of my “exciting personal news,” as I called it in a draft written this afternoon. But it’s hard to be self-congratulatory about relatively trivial matters when many of us in the NYC area tonight are mourning a “grotesque and outrageous” miscarriage of justice.
So here, without embellishment, is my bit of news: I’ve been awarded the Creative Capital | Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant for bloggers. Over the coming year, I’ll be generously compensated for my online reports and reviews.
The names of all 21 recipients of 2014 Arts Writers Grants are here. Congrats to all.
As you may have noticed, I’ve lately been cutting back my blog posting and ramping up my paid mainstream-media work. But thanks to Creative Capital, I do feel a renewed commitment to this project and to my devoted art-lings, who are the most sophisticated, savvy audience I could ever hope for.
Special thanks go to ArtsJournal and its founder/editor Doug McLennan for giving me the platform and freedom to make anything I want of this self-assignment, which has evolved over time from brief, breezy snippets with no images (let alone videos) to longer think pieces and multimedia essays. For bettter or worse, Twitter (@CultureGrrl) has largely supplanted my blog for quick takes.
You may soon notice a change in my righthand column—the addition of a “Subscribe” button, with a drop-down menu for various levels of monthly support. By “subscribing,” you’ll be retroactively validating my work during the past eight and a half years and, hopefully, supporting it in the months to come. If you’re not already in my email blast for new posts, you’ll be added by donating or subscribing.
Worry not, art-lings: CultureGrrl remains free to all. “Subscriptions” or “donations” are voluntary.
Best wishes to all for a love-filled Holiday Season, and a peaceful, productive New Year.
