News is out officially yesterday about a next chapter in my academic and professional career. After 17 years of service to the Bolz Center for Arts Administration in the Wisconsin School of Business, ten as its director, I have accepted a faculty position at American University to begin in the fall. Part of the reason I haven’t posted to this blog in a very long time has been the decision and transition to this exciting next adventure.
I came to Wisconsin as a graduate student in Arts Administration 20 years ago this August. And in many ways, I’ve been a student of arts and cultural management ever since. I cannot express the pride and privilege I feel in my many years of association with this Wisconsin program, and to the brilliant family of students, alumni, faculty, and staff that make it shine. It’s heartbreaking to leave, but the opportunity to take on a new challenge, with an extraordinary team of Arts Management faculty, in a global cultural city were too great to ignore.
I’ll be transitioning to Washington, DC, later this summer, after ensuring a healthy transition for the Bolz Center for Arts Administration in the coming months. You can expect an international search soon for a new Director for Wisconsin Arts Administration program, which has some extraordinary evolutions coming soon, as well.
I’ll keep blogging, of course (once I actually start blogging again). But my coordinates will be slightly to the East.
On we go!

I also moved from Madison to the East coast, and am certain you will love it. American University is lucky to have you.

Andrew:
My congratulations to American University and the DC Region. Our field has been fueled by your wisdom and the great work of your students and graduates. I look forward to your even greater impact in your new position.
In your next position, we’ll need to find a place for you on the west coast.

Fantastic news, Andrew. You have helped to change the face of arts administration in the U.S., and I hope American University is ready for you! I wish you and your family all the best for a smooth transition.

Onward and upward Andrew. I know you’ll keep inspiring us with your work and thoughts…just don’t stop blogging. The Artful Manager has been one of the best reads I’ve encountered.

I am DELIGHTED Andrew will be joining our faculty and am completely acting out the adage that one should always hire someone smarter than you. Andrew will be leading several of our new initiatives in the Arts Management Program as well as teaching path-breaking new courses and pursuing his research agenda. We are excited and welcome, Andrew!

Congratulations Andrew. It doesn’t matter where you land as long as your voice continues to be heard. Thank you for all you do. Wishing you all the best.

Andrew, congratulations! You have provoked and inspired me for years on this blog and your dedication to your students is evident to anyone that has seen you in action with them. You have encouraged both them and your readers to be reflective practitioners and we are the better for it. Any university would be fortunate to have you. I look forward to future posts and to seeing you in Washington once you’ve made the move.

Andrew, congratulations! It will be a challenge to find someone to fill your substantial foot-print at the Bolz Center, but i know you’ll enjoy the new horizon and new opportunities at American University. We’ll all be looking forward to your continued observations on the Artful Manager! Wishing you all the best.

As someone who has had a wonderful experience with the AU Arts Management program, I know you’ll be happy with the AU students and faculty. Also, after working with an amazing former student of yours, I’m confident you will be a great asset to the program here. Welcome!

Many congratulations Andrew! I have always tried to follow your blog but sadly contributed only rarely due to pressures of work. The cultural sector is a happy and fulfilling but demanding place: an inability to view business as complementary to creative endeavour and creative in and of itself still bedevils the teaching of arts administration in our country. I have passed details of your blog on to so many people here in the UK since the quality of the material you distribute has been excellent and through provoking. New pastures, new cheeses….

Congratulations, Andrew. I’m a long time reader. I’m glad you’re coming closer – just a few hours away. If you need a break from your moving duties this summer, come see us! I’d love to meet you.
